Michelle Zauner's solo project, Japanese Breakfast began as a month-long writing challenge during a break from Little Big League. The result was "June," an intimate set of melodic songs and electric guitar. After continuing to write solo, the varied palette, including markedly larger synth sounds from synthesizers surpassing lo-fi and indie pop became "Psychopomp", a work that deals with the emotional consequences of the death of Zauner's mother and which, according to her own, would be the only record of the band. He quickly changed his mind and signed with Dead Oceans, taking the project from the room and entering a much larger space. A journey through the suffering, dead pop stars, outer space and movement that resulted in "Another Planet", edited in 2017.
